Sonic Death of the Day: And Vinyly, a British record label, is offering audiophiles a vinyl resting place to beat the band: For a nominal fee of £2000, your postmortem remains will be pressed into an LP containing an audio recording of your choosing.

For an extra £1500, house musicians will write a special song in your memory and a professional label will distribute the finished product to music stores where hipsters can criticize you for selling your soul and snootily remark how they liked you before you were dead.

Either way, as And Vinyly founder Jason Leach says, it sure as heck beats "being in a pot on a shelf."

Kodak’s First Digital Camera

This is Kodak's first digital camera made by the Kodak Apparatus Division Research Laboratory in 1975.

It was a camera that didn't use any film to capture still images – a camera that would capture images using a CCD imager and digitize the captured scene and store the digital info on a standard cassette. It took 23 seconds to record the digitized image to the cassette. The image was viewed by removing the cassette from the camera and placing it in a custom playback device. This playback device incorporated a cassette reader and a specially built frame store. This custom frame store received the data from the tape, interpolated the 100 captured lines to 400 lines, and generated a standard NTSC video signal, which was then sent to a television set.

Nadav Kander, Israel, 1961, lives and works in London. He is a photographer with a vast amount of projects behind his name. In a three year period he has gone upstream the Yangtze River in China documenting the development and economic rise of China and it's concequences. He was awarded the Prix Pictet in 2009 for this series.

Nadav has also photographed the entire administration of Barack Obama. The New York Times published the photographs, making it the largest collection of photographs ever published in the Times by one single photographer.

"Pre-Handshake Handshake Device" by Dominic Wilcox.

Many people in the world seem to be at war with each other. We see families split through disagreements, gang warfare on the streets, politicians arguing, whole civilisations and religions constantly battling. This device aims to help those who are at odds with each other make a first move toward reconciliation.
A traditional handshake can sometimes be just too big a step for those entrenched in their dislike of the other. No matter how important it is for two people to reconcile their differences they simply can't get over their pride and lower themselves to the symbolism of a handshake with the other party.

The Portrait Machine Project by Carlo Van de Roer are photos made with a Polaroid aura camera developed in the 1970s by an American scientist in an attempt to record what a psychic might see.

This project explores the idea that a portrait photograph can reveal an otherwise unseen and accurate insight into the subject's character.

The subject is connected directly to the camera by hand-plates that measure biofeedback, which the camera depicts as an aura of color in the Polaroid and translates into a printed diagram and description explaining the camera's interpretation of the subject. It also explains separately, what the the subject is expressing and how they are seen by others, such as the photographer, suggesting the camera bypasses the control of the photographer and subject in making the portrait. This printout, which includes information about the subjects emotions, potential, aspirations, future, etc. is presented to the viewer along with each photograph in a similar manner to a caption.

Nike Music Shoe is an awesome ad for the Nike Free Run+ shoe. In the video you can see Hifana doing a live performance by using the shoes as controllers. By bending the flexible sole of the Nike Free Run+, they can control different sounds. I'm actually pretty sure that it is real because I think that I spotted Daito Manabe in the video. And we all know what he's capable of. I guess they've used some flexible sensors and hooked them up to MaxMSP. Great work!

UPDATE:
Indeed the shoes used in the video are the real sound controllers. Tomoaki Yanagisawa of 4nchor5 la6 was responsible for the hardware part. He added flexible and accelerometer sensors to the shoes. Daito Manabe of rhizomatiks did the sound programming with Max.
They were both commissioned by Wieden + Kennedy Tokyo for this project.

This made me think of the life & death project. and its just pretty much awesome.

Vegetation and microorganisms live symbiotically inside the body of this robot. The robot draws water from a contaminated river, decomposes its elements, helps to create energy to feed its brain circuits and the surplus is then used to create life, enabling plants to fulfill their own life cycle.

Adam Harvey is currently writing his thesis at the ITP and his topic is Computer Vision Dazzle. He's researching and developing privacy enhancing counter technology, to protect individual privacy for everyone. So here you can find some makeup patterns which make it impossible for the OpenCV library and it's Haar cascade files, to detect a face. Fun times ahead!

About this image:

Images with a red square tested positive, a face was found
Images without a red square tested negative, no face was found
Images under the section "TEST PATTERNS" are made according to results of the Haar deconstruction
Images under "RANDOM PATTERNS" are random doodles made without the anti-face detection patterns in mind
Images underneath the "NO PATTERNS" heading are left untouched to show that the face detection works well on simple line drawings

Its coming up quickly. Viewfinder #2 is set to open 16th of April. If you are interested in putting works up, or know someone who may be, then be sure to pass this on. Submission guidelines are below. Email info@wehaveninelives.com if you have any further questions.

Terms:
- The photo must be your own, and by submitting it you are giving us permission to use it on our site, both here and in the gallery.
- Please submit images that have been taken and processed on film camera's only (standard size photo's 6x4 and smaller please).
- We are looking for photo's (35 120 110mm etc) taken with Old SLR cameras, Polariod, Holga, Demekin, Blackbird and the like.
- You can submit up to 5 photo's, these will ALL have to have your NAME AND PHONE NUMBER ON THE BACK OF EACH PHOTO.(include blog, flickr, photobucket, web info….if you want)
- We will endeavour to use all photo's submitted, but this will not be guaranteed.
- The photo's will be hung and sold in good faith and the gallery does not take responsibility for any loss/damage that may occur during the exhibition.
- All photo's in the show WILL BE FOR SALE
- The show will open on a Thursday the 16th of April and run through to the 23rd.
- All photo's and or money can be collected on the Monday from Nine Lives after this date.
- The show will be hung with photographers details ONLY on the backs of photo's because of the number of photos. We feel this will help some of our younger and those shy budding photographers out there to get involved (hey they will have to buy your photo to find out who you are!)

"Innen Stadt Außen" is the title of Olafur Eliasson his upcomming exhibition at the Martin-Gropius-Bau in Berlin.

Innen Stadt Außen concerns itself closely with the relationship between museum and city, architecture and landscape, as well as between space, body and time. The site-specific investigations within the museum are amplified and commented on through ephemeral projects in public space, thus linking the Martin-Gropius-Bau to various places within the city.

This photo of the Berlin Fernsehturm gives you an idea what to expect. The exhibition opens on April 28th and you'll have time till August 9th to go and see it.

CHROMAesthesiae is an installation by SOFTlab at the Devotion gallery in New York. It's made of laser cut photo glossy ink jet paper and every panel has a unique color gradient. They've choosen for very simple technique to build the funnels: binder clips. Colorful!

British artist ANTONY MICALLEF appeared on the art scene in 2000, winning second prize in the BP National Portrait Award. Dealing with the subject of portraiture, human forms are placed in artificial, unnatural environments that are influenced by popular culture in the forms of fashion, music and design.

Deeply troubling, ANTONY's work examines our dichotomous relationship with consumerism, examining how we can maintain to despise multi-national brands yet still allow ourselves to be seduced by them. "The trouble with pop imagery is that it doesn't really go deeper than the surface" he says. "You have to drag it down and challenge it to make it interesting. When you put two contrasting images together, it causes friction, and that is the bit I'm interested in. Sketch-a-Move is a project by Anab Jain and Louise Klinker. They actually did this a few years ago. It's a concept for a toy car that allows you to explore the unique relationships between small surface doodles and actual physical movements. If you draw a circle on the top of the toy car, it will move in a circle. If you draw a complicated spiral, the car will move in a spiral. They don't explain how it actually works or could work, but it sure looks like fun.
